Heatless curls have dominated TikTok and Instagram throughout the year. We’ve seen sock loops and t-shirt loops come and go, and now it looks like legging loops are the hottest style this holiday season. Although I initially found the idea of tucking my hair into an old pair of Lululemon Align leggings completely comical, I still felt intrigued by the multitude of tutorials on my FYP. Could I really get dream locks without damage, without tools or fancy hair products? Last night I went out on a branch and tried this absurd trend. Surprisingly, the leggings loops turned out better than I expected. If you still have any doubts about this HairTok craze, here’s everything you need to know to pull off the look:
I honestly think video instructions are the best for heatless curls. Check out the wonderful tutorials below to watch step-by-step guides on how to properly handle your hair around leggings. All I would add is that you should make sure to do not start with wet hair! This shade can be confusing because most heatless curl techniques require starting with damp locks. But, given the athletic texture of the leggings, the humidity won’t help the curling process. Instead, I would just recommend using second day hair, so the strands don’t get too slippery.
I was quite skeptical whether this hack would work for my hair type. My hair is naturally curly, but the curls tend to melt into kinky, unpredictable waves as soon as I brush them. I had only ever seen women with straight hair try legging curls, but I always wanted to achieve an even pattern that would last. So I found a spare pair of Lulus, followed the tutorials above, and had my hair wrapped in about five minutes. The process has been so much faster than other no-heat styles I’ve tried! Not only was I shocked at how quick and easy the steps were, but I also loved how my hair was neatly tucked inside the leggings. The belt swaddling my head was snug and comfortable and meant I didn’t have to sleep on bumpy pins. I kept my hair wrapped in the cocoon of fabric overnight and simply untangled the twists while getting ready this morning. I had to hold back a small sigh, as I watched the perfect curls fall into place. It took me 30 seconds to comb the curls with my fingers to shape the style, and voila! Voluminous curls – no heat or products (and frankly no skill) required.
In the interest of balance, I must break down the cons of this hack. First, my hair got a little frizzy while wrapped in the leggings. My hair is getting frizzy on its own, but I also feel like the static texture of sportswear may have exacerbated this hair problem. Second, the method of wrapping the hair in the belt left my roots a bit flat. While tweaking your hair with a comb and some nifty sprays of dry shampoo could probably fix this, I was a bit disappointed with how the volume was just horizontal. Balanced against the speed, ease, and overall effects of the hack, these two downsides are pretty minor. But, you should always keep these pitfalls in mind if you are concerned about frizz or flatness!
I am now singing the praises of legging curls from the rooftops. I send pictures to all my friends, flex my fluffy curls, and try to get everyone I know to join this TikTok movement. If you have a holiday party coming up or planning to go out on New Years Eve, I beg you to try this hack. This hairstyle is simple, quick and sweet. What are you waiting for? Go find some leggings!
