‘The White Lotus’: All the signs you missed on who would end up dead

As fans say “Arrivederci!” in the second season of The White Lotus — and mourn a beloved character — it’s time to unbox this shocking finale.

Spoiler alert! Don’t continue if you haven’t watched the season two finale of The White Lotus.

Yes, tragically, fan favorite Tanya McQuoid-Hunt (Jennifer Coolidge) died in Sicily. After understanding their quest to kill her for her money, Tanya killed Quentin and his friends aboard their yacht before attempting to jump on a smaller boat to freedom. Unfortunately, her impromptu plan unraveled just as quickly as it came to fruition when she hit her head and fell in the water, going to her untimely death.

“She’s kind of a diva, a larger-than-life female archetype. It felt like we could craft our own lyrical conclusion to Tanya’s life and story,” creator Mike White said in a final recipe. “I just think her death at the hands of someone else was too tragic. She felt like she had to fight her best and she had, in a way, had some sort of victory. about whoever was conspiring to get rid of her so it just made me laugh to think, like, she would take out this whole cabal of killers and that after she did that she would just die this derpy death and I had just felt like it was so Tanya.”

While fan theories speculating who would end up dying ran wild on social media ahead of the big reveal, there were signs pointing to Tanya’s bad luck from the star. Pour an Aperol Spritz and follow:

An unhappy husband

In the first episode, Greg makes no secret of the fact that he is upset that Tanya brought his assistant, Portia, on the trip, eventually telling his wife to “get rid of her”. At the moment, that seems like a reasonable point of contention given that, to the viewer, this is a newlywed vacation. However, in hindsight, it’s likely he didn’t want Portia there as she was a possible obstacle to his murder plot.

Channeling Monica Vitti

In the second episode, Tanya spends the day fulfilling her Monica Vitti-inspired fantasy atop a Vespa with her husband, Greg, before he reveals he has to go. What is not said is that Vitti starred in the 1960 film, Adventure, which was partly filmed in Sicily and is about a woman who disappears on a yacht vacation with her friend. While it’s a more subtle hint of Tanya’s impending doom, Valentina’s response when Tanya tells her she’s dressed like Vitti practically screams it. As Valentina responds, “Monica Vitti is dead.”

Dress the room

A clear Godfather fan, Bert Di Grasso organizes a tour of Sicilian filming locations, which later ends up offering a major clue as to which white lotus the guests will suffer their own untimely death. During the visit, the men and Portia – who insisted on joining the excursion – have lunch near where Apollonia was mistakenly blown up in Michael Corleone’s car, marked by a car with a dummy on the inside. While Portia is later spotted wearing a Godfather T-shirt with the car on fire, it’s Tanya who finally wears the same floral print dress that was on the mannequin in the finale, signaling unexpected danger ahead.

Odes to opera

In episode five, Tanya goes to the opera with Quentin and his band to see a performance of Lady Butterfly. “After hearing the story of your love life, we decided that you were like a tragic heroine in a Puccini opera,” he tells her beforehand, making matters all the more disturbing as Madame Butterfly, whose husband left her, kills himself in the show’s finale. A less obvious, but still significant, opera reference is when Giacomo Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” Gianni Schicchi plays briefly after Daphne finds a body in the opening of the show and at the end of the finale, when he is revealed to be Tanya. Like Greg and Quentin’s plan to kill Tanya and steal her fortune, in the opera Schicchi poses as a dead man – who gave up his chance in a monastery – in an attempt to rewrite the will of the man’s family. However, in a twist, Schicchi takes the main assets the family wanted from the dead.

Tanya the Prophet

Amid suspicions that her husband is cheating on her, Tanya enlists a tarot card reader to find out if her marriage to Greg will last. However, it seems like she should have tried to tap into her own psychic powers. During the first episode, in the middle of the romance, Tanya freaks out and pushes Greg off, explaining that she “had to disassociate” while having a vision of the men. In retrospect, it seems like she had some sort of vision of her final days with Quentin and his band – as well as a premonition of Greg’s dark side.

“I was seeing all these faces of men with these very girlish hairstyles,” she told him, “and then I saw you and your eyes were like shark eyes — like, completely dead. Just, like, dead.” “

Pre-season spoiler

As White pointed out in a final recap, Tanya’s curiosity about death was on full display in the series finale. first season of The White Lotus, long before she set foot in Sicily. “I’ve had all kinds of treatments over the years,” she told Greg while discussing her declining health. “Death is the last immersive experience I haven’t tried.” Focus on immersive.
