The Sims 4 had its most successful year in terms of popularity, more than eight years after its initial launch.
Publisher EA released statistics representing the year 2022 for a number of its titles, and an impressive figure showed that a total of 1.4 billion hours of The Sims 4 have been played this year by all players.
That’s up from 2021’s figure of 1.2 billion hours, and it’s actually the highest number of hours ever played for the life sim game in a single year.
Several other statistics show how The Sims 4 increased this year compared to 2021.
436.5 million The Sims was created in 2022, a significant increase from the 2021 figure of 376 million. The Create-a-Sim base has grown over the past year, with pronouns, sexual orientation, body hair, and new hairstyles among the features that have been added for free. There were also the new occult werewolves for those who purchased the pack.
The gallery has also seen increased use, with 11.5 million gallery downloads and 209 million gallery downloads in 2022. Last year, the totals were 11.3 million and 201 million respectively.
There was also 289 million WooHoos in 2022, up from 274 million the previous year. Romantic, Enthusiastic, and Creative were the three most commonly chosen traits for Sims.
Finally, there was a total of 21.7 million deaths. The most common death was old age, unsurprisingly. Death by anger was the second and drowning was the third.
The healthy numbers show why there is currently no urgency to deploy The Sims 5. Despite an official announcement, a working title from Project René, and a first look, we’re probably a few years away from releasing the full sequel.
Major packs released this year include High school years, werewolvesand My Marriage Stories. The developers have so far confirmed two new expansions coming in 2023, as well as improved babies.
2022 was also the year the base game became permanently free.
While the game has enjoyed a fair amount of content in 2022, it has notably occasionally been plagued with high-profile bugs that called for priority fixes.
The Sims 4 is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
