Riverside’s ‘Salon-A-Thon’ Collects Donations for Christmas Office

On Monday (December 12), students in Riverside College’s hairdressing program provided free salon services to the public to raise donations for the Mission Community Services Christmas office with their annual “Salon-A-Thon.”

Aspiring hairstylists provided services such as free haircuts, shampoo and scalp massages for a donation of toys, gift cards and non-perishable food.

“The students wanted to do a gift exchange, but we decided it was best to give back to the community,” said hairstylist teacher Krista Balogh. “It just got bigger over the years.”

The hairstylist program has been hosting the “Salon-A-Thon” for a decade now, with between 50 and 100 people coming out to support the cause each year. The event once again lived up to expectations on Monday with more than 70 people coming to donate approximately 40 bags of food, 28 toys and several gift cards to the Christmas Office.

“It’s good for students to get their hands dirty and experience having so many customers,” Balogh said. “It’s also great for customers to come and see what Riverside is doing.”

The Riverside Barbers Program is also involved in the Mission community throughout the year. Students donate free haircuts to organizations such as Mission Community Services, Triangle Community Resources, SARA For Women, Mission Youth House, and Mission Mental Health.

“We have a policy that if anybody needs a haircut or a hairstyle, we do it,” Balogh said. “It’s really rewarding for students to be able to interact with [people] who are a little less fortunate and see how much of a difference they can make just by cutting someone’s hair.

The program lasts 46 weeks from September to July and currently has 14 participating students. The salon offers retail services throughout the year on Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a variety of salon services available at discounted prices.
