Whether in Bollywood or Hollywood, the Indian celebrity adorned saree never goes out of style.

There is something mystical in a sari. It can be the draping, the embroidery or the color that brightens up every occasion you wear it for. The six meters of sheer elegance has always found its way into a celebrity wardrobe and for that you have Indian fashion designers and couturiers to thank.

The beauty of a saree lies in the craftsmanship of its creator. Classic bespoke designs married with modern styling, each Indian saree has seen a number of transformations over the years. Classic styles have been taken over with pre-draped sarees, heavy embroidery is mixed with appliques and more.

From Priyanka Chopra to Janhvi Kapoor, and Paris Hilton to Victoria Beckham, the saree has traveled all over the world. On World Saree Day, News 18 celebrates the silhouette and the designers who put it on the global fashion map.

Manish Malhotra

When you think of sequins, Manish Malhotra is the designer that comes to mind. Not just Bollywood divas, even international celebrities have been MM-ified this year! Recently, hotel heiress and global style icon Paris Hilton graced the cover of a fashion magazine and looked stunning in a pink sequined saree by Manish Malhotra with feather detailing. The designer’s signature sequined and chikankari sarees have been adorned by Bollywood stars such as Kiara Advani, Katrina Kaif, Kriti Sanon, Kajol and Vaani Kapoor among others.

Sabysachi once said that the saree is a story he will never stop telling. And no matter where we are in the world, a sari always has its place. True to his word, Sabyasachi took on the Indian saree on the Cannes red carpet. Effervescent star and global icon Deepika Padukone donned her creation. Inspired by the Bengal tiger, the couture saree celebrated heritage Indian craftsmanship and techniques through a modern lens. The stripes on the saree have been block printed and hand embroidered by artisans in India. A favorite during wedding season, Sabyasachi sarees reflect the sentiments of an Indian bride. From tulle to organza, each saree designed under the brand is a celebration of Indian couture. Famous brides including Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt and Ankita Lokandhe have adorned Sabysachi sarees during their wedding ceremonies.

Indian fashion designer JJ Valaya has won the PETA India 2022 Vegan Fashion Award for Best Vegan Fashion Moment for the launch of his eco-friendly collection for his new brand JJV, made from TENCEL Luxe vegan silk. JJ Valaya’s love of travel and the iconic chevron print blend seamlessly into the sarees designed under the bridge-to-luxury line. Actor Huma Qureshi celebrates JJ Valaya’s sartorial vision in a black Tencel silk saree. The classic saree is accented with tassels and accented with the brand’s signature chevron print. Each saree created by the designers was an ode to Indian craftsmanship and textiles. The remarkable craftsmanship that is present in abundance in their designs has made them a global favorite.
