Debina Bonnerjee Talks Postpartum Hair Loss; an expert shares how to deal with it

Debina Bonnerjee, who hosted her second child with actor-husband Gurmeet Choudhary last month, regularly shares snippets of her postpartum journey, among other things, with her social media followers. In the same vein, she recently said that she suffered massive hair loss after the birth of her youngest daughter. “One thing that may have happened after all these things (delivery) is a lot of hair loss. So much hair falling out, oh my god, it’s not even funny. When I slept with the babies or worked on the bed, I saw a lot of my hair on the bed. I wondered how to control it. I asked my friends, my mother and even my mother-in-law to help me find a solution to this massive hair loss that I was facing,” she said.

Additionally, the actor-vlogger shared the reason why new mothers live hair loss. “During the last quarter of pregnancy, the level of estrogen increases in the body due to which the hair becomes beautiful and thick. But as soon as the baby is born, the level of estrogen drops drastically. You may have noticed that the hair loss starts right after that.

Ayurveda also points out that postpartum hair loss occurs due to an imbalance of doshas in the body, Debina said. “According to Ayurveda, our body is made up of three vital energies – vata, pitta and kapha. If there is an imbalance in these energies, then some disease or other occurs in the body. Experts say that hair problems are the result of an exacerbation of pitta dosha. Postpartum hair loss occurs when the pitta and kapha doshas are aggravated in the body,” she said.

Dr. Chandni Jain Gupta, Dermatology, Venereology and Cosmetology, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi, went in depth on the same. “Hair often grows in cycles (growth phase, resting phase, shedding phase: repeat). However, due to significant hormonal changes during pregnancythe majority of the hair stays in the growth phase,” she explained.

The expert said that after the baby is born, the mother hormones begin to change (again) and estrogen levels drop, triggering the onset of the hair loss phase. “Your hair is falling out in large amounts at once, which makes the hair loss seem much bigger,” she said.

What can be done?

“Although you may encounter unexpected layers in your Hair as it grows back (some moms call their new hair growth their “baby bangs”), most moms find that their hair is more or less back to normal by their baby’s first birthday.

Here are some tips to help regrow your hair, according to Dr. Gupta.

*To make your hair thicker and to help new hair regrowth blend in, try a new haircut.
*Be very gentle with your hair while washing, brushing and styling.
* Try to avoid tight hairstyles as they can put pressure on your hair and scalp.
*Use volumizer shampoos and lightweight conditioners that won’t weigh your hair down.
*To make sure your body gets all the nutrition it needs, eat healthy foods and keep taking your vitamins.
