While they were known for their on-screen friendship as Dr. Spencer Reid and SSA Emily Prentiss, their special bond extended beyond television. Matthew actually celebrated Paget’s wedding in 2014 to Steve Damstraand she has starred in a number of his projects apart from working on Criminal minds. With that in mind, it makes sense that Paget would have some idea why Matthew decided to skip the reboot after the original CBS series ended in 2020.

“Matthew was the only person in the last two seasons to have been in every episode. He’s done 15 straight,” she told Looper in August. “From 25 to 40, the guy was on a show, and that’s when we shot 22, 24 episodes a year. He never got to go do anything else, so I understand. He wants to direct. He graduated from NYU to direct, and his first audition was Criminal minds.”

So, will fans see Matthew again for more screen time as Dr. Spencer Reid? For the moment, it is to be determined. While he is busy working on projects for his best-selling children’s book of 2019, it should be noted that he has directed 12 episodes of Criminal minds. So, it wouldn’t be a big shock if he returned for a role behind the camera.

This may be something viewers should watch out for when Criminal Minds: Evolution returns on January 12…
