Coming out of a controversy over the doll in previous years, Robbie, 32, has already spoken out about some misconceptions about the film to Brits vogue shortly after the production announcement.

“People usually hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what this movie is going to be,'” she began at the time. “Then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing it and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…'”

While she acknowledged the character “carried a lot of baggage,” Robbie was thrilled to take on the challenge of taking on such an iconic role. Evoking “a lot of nostalgic ties,” Robbie said, the film has a large, pre-established fanbase – “But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”

In July, when PEOPLE asked Gosling, 42, what it was like to ‘break the internet’ with playful online reactions to his leaked photo as Ken, he joked: ‘Well the internet is trying to break me for years. It gave me no other choice.”

Gosling continued, “We had so much fun making this movie and it was nice to see everyone starting to have as much fun as we did. I can’t wait for the movie to come out and keep it going.”

Barbie hits theaters July 21.
